When starting a new game you will be given the Character Quiz. This quiz will determine your starting stats. You can view your stats, as well as your bag's inventory, save your game (doesn't work on the ROM copy), and get description of the combat types, by pressing start (enter) and navigating the pause menu. Currently the max level is 10.

But what do these stats do? Stats are what is used in damage calculation when in combat. At the moment, the math is simple. When attacking it is your chosen stat's attack minus the opponent's stat of the same type. Meaning just because you might be really good at a certain type of combat, if you encounter someone equally as good as you, you will both be at a stalemate. You may have to try another style of combat so keep other stats raised just in case. Defensive moves will add 50% of your chosen combat style's stat on top of the stat corelating to the enemy's attack, making you take less damage. This may be useful in the future when bosses have scripted fights you will have to plan against. Effect attacks apply status effects to the enemy giving you an edge in combat. Both defensive and effect moves can be combo'd into a normal attack for additional effects. You can combo a defensive or effect move with the same stat's attack type, as well as a additional two different attack types.

Attack Defence Status
Melee Parry Bleed
Ranged Dodge Slow
Magic Deflection Blind
Stealth Evasiveness Disarm
Body Block Grapple

Developer note (2024):

This game has been in the works for just over a year now and has gone through many changes. Originally it was a monster tamer but that was way out of my scope and was downsized to a simple RPG with influences from the original Pokemon games. Since then features were built in on and off as my irl scheduling allowed, and it has become what it is today. I hope to bring influences from some of my favourite RPG games like Pokemon, Final Fantasy III, Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku II, just to name a few.

I want to thank the Monster Crown, PrototypePhi, and GBStudio discord communities for helping me out and putting up with my antics during Master of None's development period. This game wouldn't be what it is without being to bounce ideas around and find fixes for issues I've ran into.

Additional, more in depth descriptions of mechanics are in the MoNCombatDoc.docx download. Beware spoilers as this does contain the behind the scenes work on the Character Quiz and all combo attacks and effects.
